A rising Democratic star in Congress who has been called the “Wonder Woman of the left, Wicked Witch of the right”could be coming to a Kentucky coal mine near you.
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of New York, has been spearheading a grand environmental legislative package dubbed the Green New Deal to tackle climate change.
The progressive plan looks to combine using renewable energy resources and economic stimulus measures. But it is being branded by conservative leaders — namely Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. — as a socialist takeover of the American economy.
During a House Financial Services Committee hearing Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, a Republican who represents central Kentucky, called on Ocasio-Cortez to see for herself the state’s struggling coal industry.
“I want to invite the gentle lady to come to Eastern Kentucky where thousands of coal miners no longer have paychecks,” he said. “I invite her to go underground with me and meet the men and women who do heroic work to empower the American economy.”
